Speaking Tour - Poster - Updated

From October 26-30th, we’ll be joined by Gloria Reyes, a Maya Achi lawyer with long-time BTS partner organization, the Rabinal Legal Clinic. Gloria is leading the case for justice for 36 women from Rabinal who suffered sexual violence during the Internal Armed Conflict and genocide against the Mayan people. She’ll speak throughout the Maritimes on this important case!

This case, which has been over 10 years in the making, is a testament to incredible strength and perseverance. Sadly, the case has not been without set-backs. Currently, the prosecution is appealing a decision made in June by Judge Claudette Dominguez to not to send the 6 former civil patrols accused of crimes against humanity to trial. On September 9th, a recusal motion calling for Judge Dominguez to be removed from the case was granted. That ruling cited her prejudicial questioning of victims and evidence of bias on account of her sister’s position in the military.

More about our invited speaker: Gloria also has experience working on land conflict cases and cases of violence against women. Before becoming a lawyer, Gloria was a school teacher and in 2016 was the director of the New Hope Foundation Education Centre.
