2018 BTS Staffing Fund Campaign

CC-May 16

Giving now will save costs on mailing a letter in early December! Can’t give at this time? Please reply to this message and we will make a note not to send you a letter*

Dear friends,
We deeply appreciate the many different ways you have supported BTS. We once again ask you to provide financial support to Breaking the Silence in order to sustain the deep relationships we maintain with our Guatemalan partners. We also need your help to continue our education and advocacy work in Canada. This has been a year of both incredible hope and incredible darkness for our long-term Guatemalan partners and there is, as always, much work to be done.

Our amazing coordinators, backed by the BTS Staffing Fund, continue to support partners working for justice under difficult, and sometimes life-threatening, political conditions.

Lisa Rankin, our Guatemala Coordinator has been accompanying our partners in the most challenging of situations. This includes through the eruption of the Fuego Volcano, and the murders and arrests of campesino leaders who work with both our fair trade coffee partners, the CCDA (Highlands Committee of Small Farmers), and with the Rabinal Community Legal Clinic. She continues to support mining resistance communities as well.

Here in the Maritimes, our new BTS Coordinator, Stacey Gomez, is working closely with Lisa to ensure that we maintain our Canadian advocacy through excellent communications. Stacey has been working to organize tours by Guatemalan Congressperson Sandra Moran in June, and Marcelo Sabuc of the CCDA in November.
This is just a taste of the committed work of our coordinators. Without Stacey and Lisa, BTS would not be able to function as the highly effective solidarity network that it is today!

Curious about how your monthly donation can help?

$10/month allows our coordinators to meet with partners throughout Guatemala, and meet with local committees throughout the Maritimes

$25/month enables our coordinators to ensure effective communications with BTS by offering regular conference calls, the monthly e-bulletin, and organizing and promoting annual tours in the spring and fall

$50/month allows the essential work of raising awareness of the important, yet increasingly dangerous, work on land justice done by the Small-Farmers Committee of the Highlands (CCDA) through the Canadian fall speaking tour of Marcelo Sabuc Xalcut, National Coordinator of the CCDA.

We are deeply thankful to our institutional supporters: the Congregation of Notre Dame, CUPE, Just Us!, Fair Trade Coffee Roasters, the Public Service Alliance of Canada, and the United Church of Canada. These organizations donate generously to the work of our staff and network because of our commitment to solidarity and social justice. Nevertheless, we still need $20,000 from individual donors to reach our fundraising goal of over $94,000 this year. As a friend of BTS, we ask you to make a donation or increase your support.

We are truly grateful for donations of any size! Every small bit makes a difference. Cumulatively, the BTS community provides deep, respectful and caring solidarity-based support for our Guatemalan partners. You can make a one-time donation or set up a recurring monthly donation. Monthly donations are particularly helpful to us to allow us to plan for salaries and ongoing base support for the work of our coordinators.

Donation options are listed below. Donations must be dated no later than December 31st in order to receive a charitable tax receipt for 2018.

In solidarity,

The BTS Fundraising Committee: Janelle Frail, Sarah Wilbur, Kathryn Anderson, Marie Claire Brisbois, Marla LeBlanc, Moira Peters, Tessa Wheaton
