Position: Maritimes & Intern Coordinator

Summary:

Breaking the Silence (BTS) is a voluntary network of people in the Maritimes who began to organize in 1988 to support the efforts of Guatemalans struggling for political, social, and economic justice. We recognize that injustice is connected to structural inequalities both within and between countries, and BTS is committed to supporting structural transformation both in Guatemala and in Canada.

In order to carry out this work, we are seeking a creative and thoughtful Maritimes & Intern Coordinator. This person will be flexible and self-motivated with strong facilitation and time-management skills, excellent interpersonal communications skills and a demonstrated interest in community engagement.

The successful candidate will have a strong working relationship with the BTS Guatemala Coordinator and take the lead on coordinating  BTS’s priority areas of work in Canada, including:

  • Guiding the network’s advocacy initiatives; Supporting local BTS committees in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island
  • Coordinating our youth internship program in partnership with Tatamagouche Centre and the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation.
  • Creating effective communications with the network and Guatemala partners
  • Promote cross-cultural learning and opportunities to deepen solidarity relationships

Duties & Responsibilities

The Maritimes & Intern Coordinator will:

Take the lead on guiding the outreach and advocacy of the BTS network. They will do this by:

  • Organizing speaking tours with Guatemalan partners in the Maritimes
  • Providing support for local committees
  • Representing and taking action on behalf of BTS in a variety of advocacy networks and strategic working groups
  • Engaging with Maritimes-based Members of Parliament on issues related to the work of BTS and partners in Guatemala
  • Coordinating solidarity and advocacy work in Canada on issues reflecting BTS’s priority areas (gender rights, territory and extractivism and historical justice)
  • Attending in-person Community Council meetings (biannual), and occasional additional CC meetings by phone and skype

Take the lead in coordinating all aspects of the BTS International Youth Internships in Coordination with Guatemalan Host Organizations, BTS Community Council, Atlantic Council for International Cooperation and Tatamagouche Centre. They will do this by:

  • Recruiting and hiring interns
  • Coordinating 5-week pre-departure training at Tatamagouche Centre
  • Traveling to Guatemala to support interns for a period up to 6 weeks (including field visits and coordinating and facilitating 1-2 reflection weekends with interns)
  • Newsletters and Communications to BTS and funders; organizing speaking events
  • Responding to emergencies and concerns as they arise, together with the Guatemala Coordinator
  • Coordinating and facilitating a 10-day re-entry program for interns (7 days debrief + 3 days actively participating in BTS Annual Gathering)

Take the lead on communications with the network. They will do this by:

  • Creating and disseminating the Annual Newsletter and monthly bulletins, urgent actions, social media updates, and the listserv
  • Updating BTS website and blog, including writing original content when necessary and possible
  • Public presentations

Promote cross-cultural learning and opportunities to deepen solidarity relationships through delegations to Guatemala and Canada. They will do this by:

  • Organizing the Canadian components of BTS delegation to Guatemala and speaking tours of Guatemalans in Canada
  • Coordinating and facilitating pre-departure training and debrief sessions with delegation participants (Guatemalan and participants from Canada) in Canada

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

The candidate will:

  • Have excellent program coordination and facilitation skills and experience working with youth/young adults in cross-cultural and/or international contexts
  • Have, at a minimum, intermediate Spanish language skills (spoken and written)
  • Be able to work remotely, from their home or own office space in the Maritime provinces, with reliable access to computer, phone, and internet
  • Be willing and able to travel, regionally, nationally, and internationally at the following (approximate) frequency:
  • Regular travel (15-20 times per year) throughout the Maritimes for 1-7 days at a time (personal access to a vehicle will make this easier)
  • Occasional travel (1-3 times per year) within Canada (but beyond the Maritimes) for 2-3 days at a time.
  • Yearly to twice-yearly travel to Guatemala for a period of 2-6 weeks at a time, including at least 2 weeks in February/March 2018.
  • In addition, be willing and able to spend up to 6 weeks at Tatamagouche Centre once every 15 months during Interns’ pre-departure training and re-orientation session (depending on personal circumstances, there could be some flexibility in how this time is arranged).

In general, the successful candidate should:

  • Have an understanding of the work and philosophy of BTS
  • Have a strong analysis of, and depth of experience in, the ongoing impacts of colonialism in Canada and Guatemala
  • Have a demonstrated interest in global human rights and social justice
  • Have developed and guided advocacy initiatives and campaigns
  • Have the flexibility necessary to coordinate work schedule with the Guatemalan Coordinator when needed.
  • Have strong writing skills, and experience drafting government-related narrative reports and funding applications, as well as writing for blogs, newsletters, bulletin and website-type content
  • Have experience using MailChimp, Canva and MS Publisher (or other newsletter/report design programs) and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
  • Be able to use or learn Wix website design.

Conditions: The Maritimes & Intern Coordinator will work remotely from the Maritimes. The successful candidate will participate in a minimum three-month probation period before a permanent position is offered. BTS requires staff to participate in self and peer evaluations bi-annually. The successful candidate must have a willingness to give and receive feedback.

Reporting: The Maritimes & Intern Coordinator reports to the Breaking the Silence Community Council.
